Access to the rear garden was difficult without going through the house. The steep slopes and unstable terracing needed considerable retaining walls to create a new access at the side of the house.

The result is a dramatic set of entrance steps leading to a raised circle of paving and water feature. Beyond the grassed area there are further terraced seating areas, tied into the lower terraces by the curving sandstone walling.
